Description:

Medium-sized robin like stance, with prominent white tipped tail fan. Male has ruby-red throat, black breast, greyer upperparts, and blackish tail with white sides and tip. Female has grey-brown upperparts, grey breast and flanks contrasting with belly, white tail-tip, black legs.


Distribution:

Common summer visitor to Gilgit-Baltistan, except for north-eastern parts of Hunza and Baltistan region. Found in semi-open landscapes above treeline, scrub and bushes usually with many scattered boulders and near water, mostly at 2600-4000m.


Behavior:

Forages mainly on ground in cover. Secretive, although often more exposed when singing. Regularly cocks tail while foraging on the ground. Eats mainly invertebrates including insects like ants, weevils and beetles, also feeds spiders, molluscs and small reptiles, especially caterpillars in summer.
